A ‘positive’ at last
I stopped to talk with a woman from Honduras today. She and her daughter were sitting with papers in their hands, grinning from ear to ear. ‘¿Cómo están?’ I asked. ‘Tenemos un positivo!’ she exclaimed. Carla, (let’s call her) and her daughter would soon leave for Florida to be welcomed by their family. When they arrive, they will immediately have to find a lawyer and request a court date to apply for asylum. I asked, ‘What is the first thing you are going to do when you arrive in Florida?’ Carla answered, ‘The first thing I am going to do is go to church and thank god for getting me here.’ Her daughter replied, ‘First, I am going to go to church. Then, I’m going to go buy roller skates.’
